Soft particles reinforce robotic grippers: robotic grippers based on granular jamming of soft particles

Granular jamming has been identified as a fundamental mechanism for the operation of robotic grippers. In this work, we show, that soft particles like expanded polystyrene beads lead to significantly larger gripping forces in comparison rigid particles. contradiction naive expectation, combination and elasticity gives rise very different properties jammed phase, compared hard-particle systems. This may be interest also beyond application

The use of few stiff fibers to control the deformation of dielectric elastomer actuators, in particular to break the symmetry of equi-biaxial lateral strain in the absence of prestretch, is demonstrated. Actuators with patterned fibers are shown to evolve into unique shapes upon electrical actuation, enabling novel designs of gripping actuators for soft robotics.
